The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, close to the Kenyan border. It offers a quieter, more remote trek with gradual ascents, making it ideal for those seeking a peaceful climb with a good success rate. This route passes through lush forests, open moorlands, and alpine deserts, culminating in a thrilling summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The descent is via the scenic Marangu Route, giving you the best of both worlds.
Arrive in Moshi for a pre-trek briefing and gear check. Meet your climbing team, rest at the hotel, and prepare for the journey ahead.
Drive to Nalemoru Gate (1,950m) and begin trekking through lush rainforest to Simba Camp. The 3–4 hour hike is gentle and offers views of local wildlife and landscapes.
Continue through heather and moorland terrain with wide views of Kibo Peak. Arrive at Second Cave Camp after 5–6 hours of trekking.
Trek further across the open moorland towards Kikelewa Cave Camp, gaining altitude gradually. This short day (3–4 hours) aids in acclimatization.
Climb steadily up towards the jagged Mawenzi Peak and set camp beneath the impressive spires at Mawenzi Tarn. The afternoon is free for rest or short acclimatization hikes.
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a barren alpine desert stretch. Reach Kibo Hut, rest, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Begin your summit push at midnight. Reach Gillman’s Point (5,681m) and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrations, descend to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
Descend through heather and forest zones to Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for celebration and overnight or departure.
Reserve your ideal trip early for a hassle-free trip; secure comfort and convenience!
