The Machame Route, known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most scenic and popular routes up Mount Kilimanjaro. Offering diverse landscapes and excellent acclimatization opportunities, this route provides climbers with stunning views as they traverse through rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts. Following your successful summit, you’ll embark on a 2-day safari through Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara, experiencing some of Tanzania’s top wildlife destinations.

Itinerary

Arrive in Moshi and meet your guide for a pre-climb briefing. You’ll review the itinerary, check your gear, and learn more about the climb. Overnight stay at a hotel in Moshi.

Drive: After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate for registration. Trek: Begin your hike through lush rainforest, where you’ll encounter rich flora and fauna, including towering trees and wildlife like blue monkeys. Ascent: Gain approximately 1,200 meters in elevation as you trek to Machame Camp, nestled within the montane forest. Meals: Lunch and dinner provided. Overnight: Machame Camp (tented accommodation).

Trek: Continue the ascent through the moorland zone, passing giant heather and volcanic rock formations. Views: Reach the Shira Plateau, where you will be greeted by stunning views of Kibo Peak. Ascent: Gain 840 meters in elevation over 5-6 hours of hiking. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided. Overnight: Shira Camp (tented accommodation).

Trek: Climb up to the Lava Tower, a significant landmark and key acclimatization point at 4,600m. Descent: After a rest at Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp for the night. This descent helps with acclimatization, as the body adjusts to the high altitude. Scenery: Traverse through the alpine desert zone and enjoy breathtaking views of the Western Breach and Barranco Wall. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided. Overnight: Barranco Camp (tented accommodation).

Trek: Start the day with a challenging climb up the Barranco Wall. This is a non-technical but steep ascent that rewards you with stunning views. Descent/Ascent: Continue through the undulating trail with a mix of ascents and descents across valleys, leading to Karanga Camp. Short Trek: This day is relatively short (3-4 hours) to allow for more acclimatization. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided. Overnight: Karanga Camp (tented accommodation).

Trek: Continue up the steep trail to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. Views: Enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding glaciers. Preparation: Arrive at Barafu Camp in the afternoon, where you'll have an early dinner and rest before the midnight summit push. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided. Overnight: Barafu Camp (tented accommodation).

Summit Attempt: Start the ascent around midnight, trekking through the darkness across scree and snow towards Stella Point on the crater rim. Uhuru Peak: Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Reach the summit around sunrise for an unforgettable view of the surrounding glaciers, plains, and even the curvature of the Earth. Descent: After taking in the views and celebrating your achievement, descend back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. Total Trek Time: 10-14 hours. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided. Overnight: Mweka Camp (tented accommodation).

Descent: After breakfast, continue the descent through the rainforest zone, passing beautiful vegetation and wildlife on your way to Mweka Gate. Certificate: At Mweka Gate, you'll receive your summit certificate (Gold for Uhuru Peak). Transfer: Return to Moshi for a celebration lunch and rest. Meals: Breakfast and lunch provided. Overnight: Optional stay at a hotel in Moshi (not included in package).

Transfer: Early morning departure from Moshi to Tarangire National Park (approx. 3 hours). Game Drive: Explore the vast savannahs, home to large elephant herds, lions, zebras, and more. Meals: Picnic lunch provided in the park. Overnight: Stay at a lodge or tented camp near Tarangire.

Game Drive: Morning game drive through Lake Manyara National Park, known for its tree-climbing lions, flamingos, and hippos. Return: Afternoon drive back to Moshi or Arusha, where your safari and adventure conclude. Meals: Breakfast and lunch provided.
